Tara's post is EPIC and there is not much to add in terms of screen bad boys that proved to be all too alluring than their "nice guy" counterpoints, but I will wager to add a few choice sassy heartthrobs. Jordan Catalano not only gave mainstream visibility to dyslexia, but epitomized the mid'90s with this haircut and smoldering gaze - no wonder he was the tool to so many girls' undoing. BLAAINE! - No! And while I can still get behind Two and Half Men because Jon Cryer was the unstoppable and lovable Duckie, the real thing that always makes me mad about Annie/Molly Ringwald in Pretty in Pink is why she didn't fuck James Spader?! C'mon! Add doing lines in his parents' gigantic study and you get the best revision of a "wholesome" John Hughes film. And yes girl (Majandra Delfino), you are looking fly, and I feel your longing for the out of this world/extraterrestrial sass of Brendan Fehr in Roswell. If you doubt the potency of his pout, watch this episode, then complain. Like Jon Cryer, I will advocate on behalf of this man's career today because of his '80s teen film roles. Though Christian Slater channels James Dean in Heathers, his rebellious smoking and psychopathic murderous rage make him a bad boy for the ages. Along the same anarchic wavelength, pre-Mad Men Vincent Kartheiser is a hottie when he's beaten up but still defiant in Masterminds, a film Tara introduced me to! But River's Edge wins for having both Crispin Glover and Keanu Reeves in their bad boy finest. Apparently I go for murderers more than drug dealers, oh good. Lastly, how could I forget this notorious one's best performance. If we could only remember him for this:
Sorry for the epic hiatus, but I got a good one for you all today.
Back in college, Tara and I would go on rom-com binges. Still despite the binges, When Harry Met Sally... remains one canonical movie that I have never seen all of in one sitting. This is a sad truth, since I think there are some liberating elements of the gender politics in the film, despite the typical conservative and heteronormative stance that is typical of many films in this genre.
Sidenote: I'm also trying to get back on my academic writing grind, as you can tell ;)
It's also sad that I haven't seen the movie in one whole sitting, because it's a favorite of many, including Tara Jean, and it deals with very relevant issues in most twentysomethings' lives, such as brief encounters, friendships, romance, general love life stuff in adult life after college, sexual fulfillment, finding your soulmate (if you believe in that sort of thing), and more specifically, the shift from Chicago to New York, midwest to east coast, well in my case it's reversed, but I'm going to experience both.
With all this said, I'm not going to share a pic of Meg or Billy, but draw your attention to the fabulous soundtrack of the movie, with amazing covers mostly done by this man. Yes, it's Harry Connick Jr., whose talent apparently dwarfs his own medium, and thanks to my Frank Sinatra Pandora station, I was able to recall a memory of watching this video with Ms. Tara in our Westco 2 dorm room.
But is my trip down memory lane to get us to Harry really relevant? I mean is he SASSY? Well, I would say that his over-gelled hair is aspiring for some kind of sassy smooth look, but if you want more evidence. Oh snap! Didn't you miss us?
In order to complement Tara's Boy Band Sasstacular, I wanted to give my ladies some love. Back in my freshman year of college we had an early '90s party which I still have some great pictures from, c/o Chris. That's Lauren and Dave as Milli Vanilli (With some sass, no?) in my freshman year room. I of course wanted to be Left-Eye (R.I.P.) and Tara wanted to be T-Boz...ok, we didn't have a Chilli, then again Chris was Kris Kross by himself, so we were working with limitations. Regardless, I have a love for TLC that goes back to my childhood, and I was super happy that Tara was into them just as much as I was if not more. I mean c'mon, these women were not only CrazySexyCool, but SASSY. Much like another hot trio, Salt-n-Pepa. Nothing says sassy like a bare midriff and a casual pose. Then again it doesn't hurt if you're a dolled-up bombshell, or four of them, like the ladies of En Vogue. But the Brit gals give us some sass we can feel too, with the GIRL POWER-screaming Spice Girls.
Charley swears that if you focus on Posh in this 2 Become 1 video you will see the sass in full effect. Then again she's got the look when she's selling Pepsi too. Those are some sassy fingers! Plus the ladies proved they could still be spicy and sassy, even after Geri left. Holler! It's maybe not a Pat Benatar tits shimmy, but a firm ass grab and a thrust of the chest definitely is a show of some sass, though maybe here it's more out of desperation than proclaiming confidence. Still the Spice Girls were formative in allowing the sass of other tamer Brit girl groups like All Saints to gain (short-lived) fame. In '90s fashion, these ladies show that sass comes in baggy carpenter jeans, but don't forget your crop top! These ladies know where it's at, wanna let you know, and do it with sass.
While Tara illuminated how one's fingers can convey sass, a lot of times the sassy face and look is complemented with some sassy eyebrows.
Brian starts back at 1 with a lifted brow. Result: He crosses my mind any and everytime, like The Rock (Dwayne Johnson). Some ladies got the thick sassy brows down too, from classic Hollywood stars like Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor. To Bollywood great Kajol, who rocks some thick brows, well almost a unibrow to be precise, with some sexiness, fierceness, and mos def some sass. But I think Tara and I can agree that when it comes to eyebrows, no one does it better and with more sass than the indelible Peter Gallagher.
I was going to focus this post on the supreme sass of NKOTB, but there were too many other excellent faces that I couldn't pass up...So here it is, the BOY BAND SASSTACULAR [Note: Were I more motivated, I would make that text sparkly and fansitey in some way, but...I'm not. Use your imagination, kids].
Jordan Knight even has the sassy finger.
Brian is totally hating on Nick's sass level.
It appears that the Nicks are generally the sassiest in their groups.
JT--Sassy, or deeply disturbing? You tell me.
Honestly, did you expect me to make a boy band post without Hanson? Sadly, Zac and Isaac need to step up their game, but Taylor's got that shit down.
